Harmonize Academy’s alternative curriculum provides daily opportunities for sports and fitness activities.

Sports and Fitness Curriculum

Physical Education (PE) was introduced into the Harmonize Academy curriculum in September 2015 and is compulsory for all students from years 9 to 11.

KS3 pupils receive two lessons of PE a week due to the nature and size of the school premises. Practical lessons take place both on site in the school hall or at other local venues such as Anfield Sport Centre, Birkenhead Trampoline Centre or Sefton Park. Students take part in activities such as boccia, football, badminton, trampolining, table tennis, boxing or fitness and well-being.

Students in years 10 and 11 receive one compulsory PE lesson a week, and similar activities to that of the year 9 curriculum are offered and changed on a half termly basis.

G.C.S.E. Physical Education is offered as an option subject here at Harmonize Academy to students in years 10 and 11. Students have two hours of G.C.S.E. PE a week. The department follows the WJEC G.C.S.E. specification for both short course and full course qualifications. Each week students that study G.C.S.E. P.E. receive one practical lesson and one theory lesson. Practical activities studied as part of the G.C.S.E. curriculum include football, badminton, table tennis and rock climbing. Students that compete or participate in other sports out of school are encouraged to obtain video evidence to support their performance at G.C.S.E. level.

Dance is a core part of the Creative Arts curriculum which gives students an opportunity for physical expression and enables them to build up a portfolio towards Dance GCSE or Performance Skills certificate.

Football, badminton, basketball, gym/boxing exercises and table-tennis are available for students to get involved with during afternoon enrichment sessions. Individual fitness sessions take place in the school fitness suite.

Harmonize Academy has a football team that undertakes weekly training and regularly take part in inter-schools tournaments and local league matches.

Students also travel regularly to local sports facilities to participate in activities such as horse-riding, golf, rock climbing, water sports and indoor skiing which offer new opportunities to try pursuits which they may not have experienced before.

These activities help to motivate students, build their confidence and team spirit as well as develop an understanding of the benefits of personal fitness.
